Lecture by Mark Mazower with the topic "How did the Greeks win?"
The series of online lectures organized by the Institute for Mediterranean Studies-FORTH about the Greek Revolution of 1821 begins on Monday, March 22, 4 p.m. (GMT+2), with the lecture of Mark Mazower, professor of Columbia University, entitled "How did the Greeks win?". Professor Mazower will raise a question not generally explicitly addressed in the historical literature: how the Greeks won in 1821, and what kind of victory it was. He will explore the general questions of demography, resource allocation, terrain and timing that explain the course and trajectory of the conflict. He will look too at modes of war financing, issues of manpower and the role of foreign intervention in determining the course of the conflict.
