Herder Prize 2006
On Friday, May 5 th 2006, at 11 a.m., in the Great Hall of Ceremonies of the University of Vienna, the Herder Prize for 2006 was awarded by the Rector of the University of Vienna to Nicos Hadjinicolaou , Professor Emeritus of the University of Crete, honorary Consul of Spain in Crete and research scholar at the "El Greco Centre" of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (FORTH).
According to the reasoning of the committee "the honor is conferred on the pioneering Greek art historian, who has opened new perspectives on his discipline through his research in Sociology and the Social History of Art. His research on El Greco has enriched our knowledge of the artist's work in a decisive way. Through his forceful commitment, his personal contacts and his wide horizon, Nicos Hadjinicolaou has contributed in a decisive way to the internationalization of Greek art history."
