Opening for two (2) PhD student positions in Maritime History funded by the project ERC StG 2016 'SeaLiT'.
The Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH), under the European Program H2020-ERC-2016 GA714437 entitled: "Seafaring Lives in Transition. Mediterranean Maritime Labour and Shipping during Globalization, 1850s-1920s-SeaLiT" (Program Coordinator Dr Apostolos Delis) invites applications for two (2) PhD studentship positions in the following two subjects:
1. "Maritime Labour in Greece, 1850-1920"
Required qualifications:
- BA degree in History or in related field of Humanities or of Social Sciences.
- MA in History.
- Excellent knowledge of Modern Greek language and proven ability of reading and understanding historical sources and documents in Modern Greek.
- Very good knowledge of English language.
Additional desirable qualifications:
- Good knowledge of French, Italian or Spanish languages.
2. "Maritime communities in the French Mediterranean, 1850-1920".
Required qualifications:
- BA degree in History or in related field of Humanities or of Social Sciences.
- MA in History.
- Excellent knowledge of French language and proven ability of reading and understanding historical sources and documents in French.
- Very good knowledge of English language.
Additional desirable qualifications:
- Good knowledge of Italian or Spanish languages.
Location: IMS-FORTH, Rethymno Crete GREECE
Contract Duration: 36 months.
Monthly Salary: Approx. 900 €.
The successful candidates will be registered as PhD students at the Department of History and Archaeology, University of Crete and they will have to obtain their viva at latest by May 2021.

- Copies of academic titles/transcripts
- A sample of academic work (e.g. MA dissertation)
- Two letters of referees
Any application received after the deadline will not be considered for the selection
Evaluation procedure
Applications will be evaluated by a three-member evaluation committee. In case of interview procedure, candidates will be invited to participate in person.
Selection Announcement
The result of the selection will be announced on the website of IMS-FORTH (www.ims.forth.gr).
Candidates have the right to appeal the selection decision, by addressing their written objection to the IMS secretariat within five (5) days since the results announcement on the web. All the above information related to the selection procedure will be available at the secretariat of IMS-FORTH in line with the Hellenic Data Protection Authority.
The selected candidates will be notified personally regarding the success of his/her application and will be requested to submit certified copies of his/her degrees. In the event that the documents submitted to not agree with the original application the candidate will be dismissed.
