Apostolos Sarris
Professor Apostolos Sarris holds a B.A./MA in Astronomy & Physics/Physics from Boston University and a M.Sc. & PhD in Physics/Geophysics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He is Professor of the Chair “Sylvia Ioannou” on Digital Humanities at the Archaeological Research Unit of Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus.
At the same time, he is an Adjunct/Affiliate Professor of Cyprus University of Technology and a Research Associate of the Dept. of Anthropology, The Field Museum of Natural History of Chicago, Illinois, USA. He has been a Senior MC Fellow of the EU at FRIAS/Freiburg University, a DLR-DAAD Research Fellow and a visiting senior researcher at the University of Leiden.
Apostolos Sarris was responsible for the establishment of the Laboratory of Geophysical-Satellite Remote Sensing and Archaeo-environment (GeoSat ReSeArch Lab) at the Foundation for Research and Technology, Hellas (F.O.RT.H.), where he acted as a Research Director and Head of the Lab (1996-2021). He has been a vice-president of the European Section of the Archaeological Remote Sensing Consortium, assistant Greek representative in the scientific committee for Peace and Security of NATO, Vice-Chair of the International Society of Archaeological Prospection (ISAP) and President of CAA-GR. He is currently Treasurer of UISPP Commission IV, and associate editor of the Society for Archaeological Sciences Bulletin, of Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences Journal and of Archaeological Prospection Journal.
He is member of scientific experts and evaluation committees for The European Research Council Executive Agency, the Russian Science Foundation, the European Research Council, the National Center of Science and Technology of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, etc.
Dr Sarris has more than 320 publications (including 1 PhD dissertation, 57 books and book chapters, 3 Proceedings volumes, 125 refereed journal papers, and 144 refereed papers in proceedings). His teaching experience include contracted Lectureships at various institutions (Aristotle Univ. of Thessaloniki; Univ. of Crete., TEI Chania; National Air-force Academy; Univ. of Maryland – European Division). Dr Sarris has organized, planned and participated in more than 250 geophysical/satellite remote sensing/GIS/GPS projects in Greece, U.S.A., Cyprus, Hungary, Albania, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Kosovo and Egypt & participated in than 112 Greek, European and international large scale projects. He has supervised 20 PostDoc, 25 PhD, 19 MA and 13 BA dissertations and has provided practical training of more than 1000 students from Greek and foreign universities (Univ. of Crete, Technical Univ. of Crete, Univ. of Thessaly, Univ. of Kalamata, TEI of Crete and Athens, Univ. of Birmingham, Université Catholique de Louvain, Chicago Field Museum of Natural History, Univ. of Cyprus, University of Michigan, a.o.).
