The user of the database can search for information about settlements in Crete during the Ottoman period, i.e. villages and suburbs of the countryside of the island, whether they are still inhabited or abandoned. S/he can also search for historical information about the Ottoman monuments in Crete, referring either to surviving or missing buildings connected to the cultural presence of the Ottoman rule and Muslims in Crete. Both of these databases are associated with corresponding maps of the island through the use of Geographic Information Systems. A third database contains information on the surviving gravestones that once adorned the graves of the Muslim Ottoman population of Rethymno from the late 17th century until 1900. Also, the system contains a catalog of the Ottoman archival material which is kept in the Historical Archive of Crete in Chania. Finally, the user can search the bibliographic data of the works used to create the above databases.
