Διαδικτυακή Διάλεξη με θέμα «Catharsis and Therapy of the Emotions in Iamblichus» (εισηγήτρια: Anne Sheppard)

Στο πλαίσιο του Eρευνητικού Προγράμματος «Μεταξύ Αθήνας & Αλεξάνδρειας. Πλατωνισμός, 3ος–7ος αι. μ.Χ.» (2022-2024), το οποίο υλοποιείται με την υποστήριξη του Ιδρύματος Α. Σ. Ωνάση, το ΙΜΣ-ITE, σε συνεργασία με το Κέντρο Ελληνιστικών Σπουδών (ΚΕΣ) της νέας Βιβλιοθήκης της Αλεξάνδρειας, διοργανώνει μηνιαία σειρά διαλέξεων με θεματολογία που άπτεται του αρχαίου Νεοπλατωνισμού (3ος–7ος αι. μ. Χ.).
Η σειρα φιλοξενεί ομιλίες διακεκριμένων μελετητών στα αγγλικά ή στα γαλλικά. Οι συναντήσεις πραγματοποιούνται μέσω της ηλεκτρονικής πλατφόρμας Zoom στις 7μμ. (ώρα Ελλάδος).
Για το έτος 2023, οι διαλέξεις επικεντρώνονται στον Πορφύριο (περ. 234-305) και στον Ιάμβλιχο (περ. 245-325) καθώς και στον Nεοπλατωνισμό του 4ου αι. μ.Χ.

Την Τετάρτη 26 Απριλίου στις 19:00 η Ομότιμη Καθηγήτρια Anne Sheppard (Royal Holloway, University of London) θα μιλήσει με θέμα: «Catharsis and Therapy of the Emotions in Iamblichus». Η ομιλία και η συζητηση θα γίνουν στα αγγλικα.

Περίληψη
In his Reply to Porphyry (De mysteriis) I.11 Iamblichus compares the benefits of watching and listening to ecstatic ritual with the effects of tragedy and comedy which stabilize and purify the emotions, making them more moderate (metriōtera). Iamblichus here appears not only to accept the notion of catharsis found in Aristotle’s Poetics and Politics but also to associate this with metriopatheia and so with civic virtue (politikē aretē). Elsewhere, in Reply to Porphyry III.9 and On the Pythagorean Life chs.15 (64) and 25, Iamblichus discusses the role of music in therapy of the emotions. I shall examine the relationship between these passages and Reply to Porphyry I.11 and will argue that for Iamblichus emotional therapy through music is associated with the condition of the soul which later Neoplatonists labelled as ‘natural’ or ‘habituated’ virtue (physikē or ēthikē aretē) rather than with civic virtue.
